by Dipankar Mandol

This Bengali poem by Dipankar Mandol, "Tribhujalay" (The Triangle), is a poignant meditation on separation and existential longing, where geometric imagery—a triangle cut from paper—becomes a metaphor for a fractured relationship that never quite connected; the speaker's confession of not having introduced "my world" to "you" carries a quiet, haunting regret, while the Himalayan vantage point and the flat plains below suggest how lived paths shape our vision but fail to guide us toward what we truly await. The poem's closing lines—cutting a tree because "I haven't found a life"—transform domestic imagery into a stark existential gesture, blending tenderness with quiet desperation in a way that feels both intimate and universal.
